In 1838 he travelled to Egypt with Prince Maximillian of Bavaria. He produced a number of lithographs for a folio entitled "Genre Bilder Gesammelt auf der Orientalischen Reise". Von Mayr made a study of the customs, habits, clothes, architecture and designs of the "Orient". Among the most interesting studies were comparisons of a number of objects on one page and studies of horses.
